    Adaptive Driving

Gain Independence in Driving at the Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center

If an illness or injury has left you unable to drive, the Adaptive Driving Program at Patricia Neal Rehabilitation will help you get back on the road. Driving is one of the primary ways to regain lost independence.

Illnesses or injuries that can cause driving impairment include: paralysis, loss of limb, decreased cognition, visual/perceptual deficits, decreased strength and range of motion.

The Adaptive Driving Program program assesses the individual’s cognitive, visual/perceptual, as well as physical abilities needed for driving. The program also includes a needs assessment for possible equipment to augment deficits that could make the driving task difficult or impossible by themselves.

Extensive training is provided to help participants become independent drivers. In order to attend the program, participants must obtain a doctor referral for "OT eval/driver’s training."

This program is generally not covered by insurance. Please contact your provider for possible reimbursement. Charges are hourly and costs vary depending on the extensiveness of the need. A monthly installment payment plan can be arranged with a financial counselor.

It is also the policy of the Department of Safety to not license anyone who suffers from uncontrolled epilepsy, momentary lapses of consciousness due to epilepsy, cardiac syncope, diabetes or other conditions until the person has been seizure free or lapse free for a period of one year with a favorable medical statement, or six months with a favorable medical statement and approval of the Medical Review Board and the Department of Transportation.

For more information or to schedule an evaluation time, call Kristy Clark, OTR/L, at (865) 541-2493.
